The purpose of this subject is to provide students with an understanding of the impact of nutrition on health. the subject will provide the student with the skills and knowledge to assess and manage the nutritional status of individuals and groups within diverse clinical and cultural contexts. The students will learn the physiological basis of nutrition, nutritional requirements, the nature and composition of foodS and food groups; nutritional assessment; and social, cultural and economic aspects of nutrition relevant to local, national and international settings. Students will be introduced to a broad scope of health interventions to treat, manage, and promote optimal nutritional status in a variety of client groups. Special nutrient needs of people across the lifespan are discussed and nutritional needs of those experiencing acute and chronic disease processes will be addressed alongside key factors relevant to the prevention of chronic disease and illness.
Learning Outcomes
- (1) Understand the role of the Registered Nurse and/or Registered Midwife in relation to assessing, managing and promoting optimal nutritional status across the human lifespan in a range of client groups; (2) Describe the role and function of key nutrients, including food sources, consumption and digestion patterns;
- (3) Gain skills and experience in nutrition assessment techniques, dietary advice and monitoring including an introduction to the nutrition care process that underpins delivery of effective clinical nutrition care in a variety of settings; (4) Discuss and implement strategies to address nutritional needs of individuals experiencing acute and chronic disease processes;
- (5) Identify nutritional needs of specific groups across the lifespan, from pregnancy and lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence, and maturity and ageing; (6) Evaluate individual dietary intake to ensure balanced nutritional intake that will meet the cultural and religious needs of individuals within a range of clinical contexts;
- (7) Discuss concepts related to promoting healthy families and communities, and the relationship between social, cultural and behavioural factors that influence nutritional intake and health;
- (8) Know and apply the national nutritional standards of reference for nutrition and the recommendations for weight management, eating disorders and food sensitivities in nutritional care planning; and (9) Explore and critically evaluate nutritional information in the public arena, including the Dietary Guidelines for Australian Adults, which provide advice to the general population about healthy food choices consistent with minimal risk for the development of diet-related diseases.
