The subject begins the professional training for medical laboratory science students. Professional ethics, quality assurance and standards pertaining to the medical science sector are introduced. An overview of the medical laboratory is covered in the context of sample requirements for each discipline. For each, preanalytical variables and infection control pertinent to common pathology tests are addressed and measures to limit these errors are discussed. Venipuncture and other sampling techniques are taught; patient care communication is covered as is first aid. An overview of the requirements for the packing and shipping of clinical and hazardous samples from remote regions to urban centres is provided.
