This subject investigates aspects of professionalism in rural and remote medicine. The topics covered include risk assessment, quality and safety, managing uncertainty, professional obligations, culturally appropriate professional, unprofessional behaviour, doctor self care and reflective practice and professional development.

Learning Outcomes

• Recognise, document and manage adverse events and near misses and keep clinical documentation in accordance with legal and professional standards;
• Participate in institutional quality and safety improvement and risk- management activities;
• Develop and apply strategies for self-care, personal support and caring for family and respect local community norms and values in own life and work practices;
• Obtain a clinical history that reflects contextual issues including: presenting problems, epidemiology, culture and geographic location;
• Recognise unprofessional behaviour and signs of the practitioner in difficulty among colleagues and respond according to ethical guidelines and statutory requirements.
