Students are introduced to audio and audiovisual journalism for radio, television and the web. They learn how to record voice and other sound and how to use broadcast equipment and develop editing skills for audio packages. After an introduction to the basics of camerawork students learn how to present stories in a visual way. Tutorials develop skills in broadcast newswriting, sound gathering, camera work, interviewing, voice production, audio and video editing, and style. By producing pieces for the JCNN digital media platform, students sophisticate their generic journalistic and newswriting skills and develop their own ways of presenting journalistic stories.
Learning Outcomes
- ability to write effectively in the distinct broadcast form and understand how it differs from writing in other media;
- develop sufficient skills to produce and present news packages for a real radio program;
- develop skills in camera work and news packaging for television;
- develop an understanding of the theory of broadcast news; and;
- develop skills in voice production, electronic news editing and cultural literacy.
