In this subject you will develop an appreciation for the population health approach to health promotion, screening, prevention and disease monitoring, with a focus on the priority populations, diseases and age groups in Australia. Population health enables us to focus on an entire population and to study that population's unique characteristics so that large scale programmes are specific and effective means of improving health outcomes. Through participating in this subject, you will be able to analyse your own clinical practice from a population health perspective, identifying populations who are underserved in your community and the social determinants of health that may contribute to this. You will develop skills in critical appraisal of literature and health programmes and gain knowledge about survey tools, health promotion and evaluation of health programmes. We will briefly cover the national guidelines and objectives for population health, and the preparation of health impact assessments and audits.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate an understanding of a population health approach to community health activities;
• Apply population health approaches to the design, implementation and evaluation of health activities within your scope of practice in the community;
• Evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion, prevention and screening programmes within the framework of social determinants of health;
• Analyse health outcomes from a population and social determinants of health framework;
• Develop an understanding of the key issues and challenges of planning projects to address chronic disease, cardiovascular health, cancer and occupational health.
