This subject introduces ethical principles and theories, and explores how these may be used to help health service managers recognise and analyse the ethical aspects of their work. It also considers the role of professional codes of ethics, and formal statements of human rights, in the determination of ethically acceptable practice. The focus is on the application of ethical theory to everyday issues encountered by managers in health care settings, in order to promote the ethical standing of their own practices and those of co-workers.

Learning Outcomes

• 1. Discuss ethical issues using the correct terminology, and explain their relationship to legal and professional requirements; 2. Analyse ethical issues, drawing on a range of common ethical theories;
• 3. Identify the ethical aspects of practices and problems commonly encountered in health care contexts; 4. Identify personal standpoints on ethical aspects of practices and problems commonly encountered in health service management contexts;
• 5. Explain how to conduct health service management functions in ways that are ethically and professionally defensible, and that take into account formal statements of human rights and professional codes of ethics;
• 6. Recognise ethical and unethical features of interpersonal relationships in the workplace;
• 7. Describe the requirements for creating and maintaining an ethical approach to financial management and resource allocation; 8. Describe ways of creating and promoting an ethical workplace.

ADMISSION TO BACHELOR OF BUSINESS (HEALTH MANAGEMENT MAJOR): 9 CREDIT POINTS OF ANY BX SUBJECTS

Assessment:	end of semester exam (60%); essays (15%); assignments (25%).
Special Assessment Requirements:	Pass grade on Assessments 2 and 3 is minimum requirement for subject pass, the cumulative semester total on all marks amounting to 50% or more to achieve an overall pass.
