Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Secondary).
This subject addresses principles, practices and content related to teaching and learning in the social sciences and its informing disciplines of History and Geography in secondary settings with reference to relevant national and state curriculum frameworks. The subject develops pre-service teachers' competence in planning, implementing and assessing historical and geographical inquiries which promote active and informed citizenship. The subject builds a repertoire of strategies that promote higher-order thinking capacities in order for children and adolescents to critically engage with evidence and arrive at well-reasoned conclusions and sustainable courses of action. The subject will also draw on and develop pre-service teachers' own knowledge and understanding of biophysical, social, economic and political systems.
Learning Outcomes
- review, critique and apply theoretical orientations, sources of knowledge, and pedagogical and curriculum principles which inform social science education;
- demonstrate knowledge of indigenous and diverse perspectives, and strategies to cater for a variety of learner characteristics and needs; Utilise curriculum, inquiry- learning and assessment frameworks in order to plan intellectually challenging and worthwhile environmental and social inquiries; Employ strategies which explicitly and purposefully promote students' literacy, numeracy, ICT and critical thinking skills within investigative and participatory contexts; demonstrate AITSL Graduate Teacher Standards at a developed level;
- utilise curriculum, inquiry- learning and assessment frameworks in order to plan intellectually challenging and worthwhile environmental and social inquiries;
- employ strategies which explicitly and purposefully promote students' literacy, numeracy, ICT and critical thinking skills within investigative and participatory contexts;
- demonstrate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a developed level.
| Assumed Knowledge: | The organisation of ED3212 assumes that students are able to draw on a range of university studies in relevant disciplines to devise learning activities specific to the social science subjects at the secondary level. ED3212 also assumes that students will deepen their understanding regarding general curriculum, learning and pedagogical issues. Students should have acquired levels of literacy and numeracy consistent with a third year undergraduate student undertaking a Bachelor of Education at James Cook University. |
