Subject will be offered every 2nd year starting 2014 and will be restricted to students with a Credit average or with sufficient industry experience.

Growth in global aquaculture production is derived primarily from Asia and is based on shrimp, Panga catfish, tilapia, algae, freshwater prawn, carp and Asian sea bass. Despite the enormous expansion in aquaculture in the region, however, many industrial aquaculture practices are not efficiently undertaken and compared to the Australian aquaculture context, technological developments not quickly adopted. This subject complements the aquaculture learning experience through practical and field exposure to the major aquaculture species cultured in the tropics and will provide students with the opportunity to place their learning into the real-world of large-scale industrial aquaculture practices. The subject entails a two-week field trip to Vietnam where students will be involved in hatchery propagation of tropical aquaculture species and visit commercial farms representative of major tropical species cultured

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate their theoretical knowledge of sustainable aquaculture principles through oral and written critique of farming practices used for tropical species in Asia;
• Apply learning of aquaculture principles and tropical species into the practical production of seedstock of important tropical species under cultivation;
• Recognise through critical evaluation both limitations and potential of current aquaculture practices conducted in the tropics.

Assumed Knowledge:	Students are assumed to have a basic understanding of aquaculture principles and techniques. Knowledge of species commonly cultured in tropical aquaculture is also assumed.
