This subject is only available to student currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Advanced.
This subject is available to students in the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) only. With the assistance of the students' mentors and the subject coordinator, participating students will be placed within research teams operating within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, where they will complete a research project that forms part of the work of the research team. The research may be field or laboratory based. A member of the academic staff of the relevant school will assume overall responsibility for the student although a PhD student, research fellow or a collaborating researcher at an external organisation may supervise the day-to-day activities of the student. The work will be of a size and scope that can be completed in 120 hours of work and introduces the student to methods and techniques that have current relevance to the discipline.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will gain hands-on experience of working in a real research environment and will develop an appreciation of the challenges of scientific rigour;
- Students will develop an understanding of how members of a research team interact on day-to-day and longer-term basis;
- Students will gain experience in the application of techniques and approaches to real and current research problems;
- Students will gain understanding of the ethics and workplace health and safety responsibilities and requirements of all research workers.
