Enrolment in this subject is restricted to all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Physiotherapy IHCAP and the Bachelor of Physiotherapy Honours Programs.

This subject will continue the exploration of physiotherapist's role in acute care. The management of seriously patients will be explored, including physiotherapy management of intubated and ventilated patients. Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation will also be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

• understand the structure and function of body systems, particularly the cardiopulmonary system, as they relate to key illnesses and diseases whilst identifying the impact of illness on functional capacity and the implications for physiotherapy;
• demonstrate proficient and safe professional performance of selected physiotherapy intervention techniques appropriate for individuals and groups in an acute care and rehabilitation environment, including awareness and adherence to ethical standards;
• competently perform assessment of an individual with cardiopulmonary pathology, including individuals in intensive care and/or high dependency. Using sound clinical reasoning skills integrate knowledge of pathophysiology with assessment findings in order to develop an appropriate physiotherapy intervention plan;
• demonstrate effective communication skills required to produce a successful clinical interaction and reflect on how performance may be improved through self-critique;
• use self-reflection to critique and improve performance.

Special Assessment Requirements:	Students must pass the written exam, practical exam and viva (oral exam) to pass the subject. Students are also required to complete clinical placement, submit a completed clinical logbook and complete ePortfolio items as described in the subject outline. No marks are allotted to the clinical placement, clinical logbook or ePortfolio items.
