Pharmaceutical Public Health is a developing specialty which seeks to influence pharmaceutical health determinants on a population basis, rather than having a focus on the individual patient. This subject commences with an exploration of environment and climate on selected tropical diseases. The remainder of time is devoted to the three major non-communicable diseases of diabetes, asthma and hypertension and focuses on life-style adjustment measures as a means of reducing the adverse health impact. Throughout this subject, consideration is given to the role which community pharmacists can play in educating the public and in promoting healthy life-styles.

Learning Outcomes

• be able to describe the impact of tropical diseases on population health, and the interventions which succeed in reducing the incidence of these diseases including leptospirosis, oncheriasis, dengue fever, trachoma, ross river fever;
• understand Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and be able to describe the life-style measures which can be taken to prevent emergence of Type 2 Diabetes;
• understand Asthma triggers and be able to describe measures which can be taken to reduce the frequency of acute asthma attacks;
• understand hypertension as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and be able to describe life-style adjustments which can be taken to reduce elevated blood pressure;
• be able to implement in a community pharmacy setting education and health promotion, healthy life-style campaigns to control and reduce prevalence of the above diseases.

Graduate Qualities

• The ability to use independent judgment to synthesise information to make intellectual and/or creative advances.
