This subject provides a strong foundation in counter prescribing and the provision of unscheduled products, S2 and S3 medications for the treatment of patients who present to pharmacists with self limiting conditions. An emphasis will be placed on the process of counter prescribing and outline the use of various tools that assist pharmacists to make appropriate decisions regarding this type of presentation to pharmacies. It will discuss the relevant role of pharmacists and pharmacy assistants/technicians, legal, ethical and professional issues and the management of common presentations that are within the scope of practice of a pharmacist. The subject will also look at the implication of genetics in pharmacy practice focusing on common genetic disorders in adult life, the molecular biology of cancer and understanding the basis of inter-patient variation in drug response.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate the skills necessary to obtain a pharmaceutical history, medical history, presenting complaint history as appropriate for minor self limiting conditions;
• Understand the responsibility of the pharmacist in the management of common conditions and other pharmacy staff in relation to the supply of medications for therapy;
• Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate referral and how this would be affected;
• Demonstrate an ability to treat simple self limiting conditions with the products that are available over-the-counter (unscheduled, S2 and S3);
• Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of genetics in pharmacy practice.
