This subject is focused on the challenges of midwifery and maternity care provision in remote areas of Queensland, and the widwife's role in providing advice, care and support in culturally safe ways according to a public health agenda.
Learning Outcomes
- provide care consistent with the philosophy, ethics and ANMAC (2006) Competency Standards demonstrating beginning competence in providing evidence-based care for women in labour and then care of the woman, baby and family in the first postpartum weeks;
- appreciate the tensions that arise when offering choices to women living in rural and remote Australia, in terms of the conditions that influence the delivery of maternity care;
- examine the epidemiology of maternal and child health in rural and remote Queensland with an emphasis on the interaction of personal (biologic and psychosocial) factors with social, political, economic and political cultural structures;
- promote intersectoral, culturally safe, respectful health services that support individual rights, interests, preferences and beliefs;
- demonstrate knowledge of the theories, concepts and methods necessary to provide and evaluate evidence-based safe midwifery care for women resident in rural and remote Queensland.
