This subject will provide the student with the skills and knowledge to assess and manage the nutritional status of individuals and groups within diverse clinical and cultural contexts. Students will learn the physiological basis of nutrition, nutritional requirements, the nature and composition of food groups, nutritional assessment and social, cultural and economic aspects of nutrition relevant to local, national and international settings.
Learning Outcomes
- understand the role of the Registered Nurse in relation to assessing, managing and promoting optimal nutritional status across the human lifespan in a range of client groups;
- gain skills and experience in nutrition assessment techniques, dietary advice and monitoring including an introduction to the nutrition care process that underpins delivery of effective clinical nutrition care in a variety of settings;
- identify nutritional needs of specific groups across the lifespan, from pregnnacy and lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence, and maturity and ageing;
- discuss concepts related to promoting healthy families and communities, and the relationship between social, cultural and behavioural factors that influence nutritional intake and health;
- know and apply the national nutritional standards of reference for nutrition and the recommendations for weight management, eating disorders and food sensitivities in nutritional care planning.
