This subject builds on earlier learning. Students consider the midwife's role relating to health assessment, health promotion, primary counselling and working with well women in the postnatal period.

Learning Outcomes

• to provide care consistent with the philosophy, ethics and competencies as prescribed by the ANMC and understand the key principles of mandatory reporting and the Midwife's Scope of Practice;
• to implement strategies designed to assist the mother establish and maintain breastfeeding;
• to apply knowledge and skills relating to the administration of medications, screening tests and immunizations to the new infant according to State and Federal regulations;
• to provide information to parents regarding public health and community resources and to make appropriate referrals;
• to take part in appropriate and culturally safe health promotion activities.
