This subject acknowledges that many conflicts may not be resolved at all, completely, or quickly. The subject considers constructive approaches to managing and transforming ongoing conflict. Students learn about the characteristics of ongoing conflict and some of the factors that contribute to a conflict's intractability. This subject delivers a range of techniques for effectively managing ongoing conflict, including: handling conflict avoidance; using and responding to power wisely; appropriate conflict communication and developing support systems for conflicting parties. Students gain a greater understanding the role of the conflict professional in supporting long-term transformation of conflict, beyond any potential resolution.
Learning Outcomes
- describe characteristics of ongoing conflict, explain how to manage such conflict constructively and distinguish a range of communication strategies for parties in conflict;
- choose the most effective strategies based on the characteristics of a particular conflict and apply techniques to constructively work with ongoing conflict;
- analyse the role of a conflict specialist beyond resolution;
- develop strategies to support parties to manage and transform long-term conflict;
- critically evaluate the limitations of conflict resolution and compare various approaches to dealing with conflict.
