This subject examines the environmental history of Australia and the broader Pacific. The comparative aspect of this course will identify which differences and which similarities between physical environment and human culture are significant in the environmental histories of these places. In addition, the course will include analysis of the local environment by examining the particulars of human settlement in North and Far North Queensland.
Learning Outcomes
- to appreciate the historical ramifications of divergent attitudes to the natural environment, both between cultures and through time;
- to understand key historical debates in the field as they relate specifically to this region;
- to acquire familiarity with the diverse range of methodologies employed by environmental historians;
- to develop a framework for considering the relationship between society and environment.
