This subject introduces students to a broad examination of the relationship between human geography and the social sciences. Students will be able to appreciate the challenges facing the nation-state and our understanding of political community. Students will be exposed to a new spectrum with the increase in globalisation, finance and culture. Many students will also appreciate the concept of environmentalism and its implications. Finally, students need to conceptualise the reshaping of places and their cultural and political identities in the wake of globalisation and localism.
Learning Outcomes
- understand the following ideas with reference to a world view: roles, purposes, concepts, and skills relevant to geography; major features of the physical and human environments; characteristics of developed and developing nations; population characteristics, distribution, growth, and challenges;
- understand the following ideas with reference to a world view: environmental management and protection, and economic growth in the context of sustainable development; food production and distribution; the status of industrialisation and urbanisation; and interdependence of the developed and developing nations.
