This subject develops students' own theoretical and practical concepts for the teaching of English in the primary and middle school. The subject is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and practices to teach and support learning in the 'Ways of Working' and 'Knowledge and Understanding' of the English Essential Learnings. Students develop knowledge and understanding about assessment and standards in the curriculum area of English as well as the acquisition and developmental stages of language and literacy from Years 1-9. The subject also addresses and builds on the concept of literacy as 'core business' for all teachers and explores literacy as an integrating factor across the curriculum

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the English Essential Learnings in the primary and middle school and associated pedagogies for student achievement;
• demonstrate knowledge and understanding of teaching English through employing a range of strategies and effective practices related to standards and assessment;
• demonstrate an awareness of the diverse student population of Queensland and develop quality English teaching practices to meet the needs of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and NESB students;
• employ strategies which explicitly and purposefully promote students' skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT through effective English practices;
• develop a repertoire of practices for the effective teaching of English and literacies from Years 1-9 with an ability to use multimedia texts within a variety of genres and incorporate these into effective teaching and learning programs.
