ED4306 - Students with Reading Difficulties

Credit points: 03
Year: 2013
Student Contribution Band: Band 1
Administered by: School of Education

Available to level 4 BEd (Professional Development)third and final year BEd pre-service students.

This subject focuses on teaching primary and secondary students who have difficulty with reading. As there is a range of reasons why students may have such difficulties and as they respond in different ways to instruction, the teacher's task is to devise the most appropriate program to meet the needs of each individual. The subject helps to equip teachers with a deeper understanding of the complexities of reading and of learning to read so that there is a strong base for approaching the teaching task. As well, the subject builds knowledge of a range of assessment and instructional strategies so that the teacher has adequate resources to address the varying needs of learners and to devise programs with a good chance of success. The subject aims to enhance participants' knowledge of the reading process, difficulties that students may face and ways of overcoming them.

Learning Outcomes

Assumed
Knowledge:
It is assumed that participants have a strong knowledge about teaching and, in particular, the teaching of reading. This subject builds on observations about children who experience difficulty with reading and should represent a way of helping you to cope more effectively with this challenge. While ED4496 or the earlier ED4403 are not prerequisites for this subject, it is preferable for students to undertake ED4306 after doing one of those because of the need to come to this subject with an understanding of the reading process.
