Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Middle School and Secondary). Note: The lectures and tutorials for the Cairns offering of this subject are delivered via videoconference from Townsville.

This subject provides an introduction to English education in the secondary school, focussing particularly on Years 8-10. Topics include: English syllabi (and associated documentation and theoretical underpinnings); lesson and unit planning, including assessment, in Years 8-10 English; pedagogies of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing as they apply to the English classroom; and issues (theoretical and practice-based) of literacy, language, literary and popular culture studies, and student diversity.

It is assumed that students will have gained a Pass Grade or above in ED1421, and have the capacity to build upon the content matter and its classroom applications as addressed in that subject. It is also assumed that students will have advanced academic literacy capabilities as required for the successful completion of the assessment tasks in this subject. So, too, it is envisaged that you will have the appropriate knowledge and skills to engage critically with set texts and tasks.
