This subject addresses principles and practices and content related to teaching and learning in the social sciences and the informing disciplines of History and Geography in middle school settings with reference to relevant national and state curriculum frameworks. The subject develops pre-service teachers' competence in planning, implementing and assessing historical and geographical inquiries which promote active and informed citizenship. The subject builds a repertoire of strategies that promote higher-order thinking capacities in order for children and adolescents to critically engage with evidence and arrive at well-reasoned conclusions and sustainable courses of action. The subject will consolidate pre-service teachers' own knowledge and understanding of biophysical, social, economic and political social systems.

The organisation of ED3212 assumes that students are able to draw on a range of university studies in relevant disciplines to devise learning activities specific to the social science subjects at the secondary level. ED3212 also assumes that students will deepen their understanding regarding general curriculum, learning and pedagogical issues. Students should have acquired levels of literacy and numeracy consistent with a third year undergraduate student undertaking a Bachelor of Education at James Cook University.
