This subject addresses principles and practices related to teaching and learning in the humanities and social sciences in primary settings with reference to relevant state and national curriculum frameworks. The subject develops pre-service teachers' competence in planning, implementing and assessing social inquiries which position learners as active and informed citizens. The subject builds a repertoire of strategies that promote higher-order thinking capabilities in order for children to critically engage with evidence, and arrive at well-reasoned conclusions and sustainable courses of action. Particular attention will be given to developments in the Australian curriculum, including the cross-curriculum priorities of Indigenous perspectives, Asian perspectives and sustainability.
Learning Outcomes
- pre-service teachers understand the importance of the humanities and social sciences as a learning area in light of environmental sustainability and human development imperatives;
- pre-service teachers utilise curriculum, inquiry learning in the humanities and social sciences and assessment frameworks in order to plan intellectually challenging and worthwhile inquiries;
- pre-service teachers apply theoretical orientations, sources of knowledge, and pedagogical and curriculum principles to learning in the humanities and social sciences;
- pre-service teachers employ strategies which explicitly and purposefully promote students' literacy, numeracy and critical thinking capabilities within inquiry learning contexts.
