The content of this subject ensures that students are adequately and confidently numerate and possess knowledge and understanding of numeracy as a fundamental component of learning, performance, discourse and critique in all life settings. Students investigate mathematical topics which form relevant background for middle school, primary and early childhood education. These include mathematical systems, the real number system, elementary number theory, chance and data, deductive and transformational geometry, measurement and algebra.
Learning Outcomes
- construct a sound conceptual and procedural knowledge of the mathematics currently experienced in early childhood settings and taught in primary and middle schools;
- develop confidence in an ability to apply that mathematical knowledge in a middle school, primary or early childhood classroom as appropriate;
- construct an understanding of numeracy as involving the ability to use a combination of underpinning mathematical concepts and skills from across the discipline (numerical, spatial, graphical, statistical and algebraic);
- mathematical thinking strategies, general thinking skills and a grounded appreciation of context.
Graduate Qualities
- The ability to define and to solve problems in at least one discipline area;
- The ability to find and access information using appropriate media and technologies;
- The ability to evaluate that information;
- The ability to generate, calculate, interpret and communicate numerical information in ways appropriate to a given discipline or discourse;
- The ability to work individually and independently;
- The ability to select and use appropriate tools and technologies;
- The ability to use online technologies effectively and ethically.
