This subject deals with children's growth and development from birth to adulthood with an emphasis on childhood and adolescence. Students will study physical, cognitive, moral, psychosocial and emotional aspects of development and the complex interactions between them. Ethical theories will also be outlined to prepare students for the professional and ethical dimensions of teaching. The subject will be developed by first outlining the historical and philosophical antecedents of development models. Students will be given the opportunity to apply the most empirically established models to explain human development and behaviour. They will examine current research and understanding of intelligence theories, motivation, atypical development, cultural diversity and resilience. In order to interpret subject concepts critically students will be required to engage with constructivist, behavioural, and neuroscientific approaches to teaching and learning. Lectures, tutorials and assessment will provide students with opportunities to reflect on human development in educational contexts, to foster sustainable professional practices. *Students enrolled in this subject will be required to have a "Suitability Card for Child-Related Employment" (Blue Card) issued by the Commission for Children and Young People.
