Spectroscopic methods are widely used methods for the analysis and characterisation of materials. These lectures begin with the regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and the corresponding spectroscopic techniques. The basic principles of absorption and emission of radiation will be presented with a summary of aspects of the physical chemistry behind these spectroscopic techniques and their instrumentation. When individual techniques are later discussed, the main focus will be the application of these methods in characterising molecules and reactions. The spectroscopic methods presented will include mass spectrometry, vibrational spectroscopy (infrared and Raman spectroscopy), UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. Topics will be presented with a historical background, highlighting the advances that have increased the applications for these techniques in modern chemistry. This course will conclude with a discussion on the application of instrumental methods to structure confirmation and structure determination for organic molecules.
