An advanced treatment of bird biology, including techniques in field ornithology. Lectures will emphasise unique aspects avian anatomy and physiology, taxonomy, evolution, population and community ecology, behaviour, and conservation biology. Tutorial sessions will facilitate the interpretation of contemporary ornithological literature. Practical sessions and fieldwork will provide exposure to methodology, including identification and surveys.
Learning Outcomes
- an appreciation of the unique challenges of avian conservation biology;
- a command of avian taxonomy, and appreciation of evolutionary origins, and an understanding of fundamental aspects of the anatomy and physiology of birds;
- an understanding of the ecological roles of birds in a diversity of habits, and an appreciation of their behavioural ecology;
- the ability to interpret and critique published papers in the ornithological literature;
- the ability to conduct independent laboratory and field studies of bird biology utilising appropriate contemporary methodology.
