People are the major asset of any organisation. Managing People provides students with a solid foundation for understanding and addressing core issues, perspectives and decision-making procedures relating to the management of people (Human Resources). A central aim is to provide a framework for designing, implementing and maintaining Human Resource Management (HRM) practices which are contemporary, relevant and capable of sustaining organisations in competitive environments including those in tropical regions. This is achieved by discussion and analysis of numerous theoretical and practical examples from Australia and the international business environment. Topics include planning, recruitment and selection, performance management, workplace health & safety, accountability and workplace diversity. A practical and relevant 'Hot Topic' relating to managing people in the tropics will be woven through the subject. This subject is a core requirement for the Management and Human Resource Management Major.
Learning Outcomes
- Discuss the major functions related to managing people in organisations and the contemporary human resource management and legal environment;
- Discuss the theory and practice of HRM systems in Australia in terms of work analysis and design, planning, recruitment, information systems and industrial relations;
- Explain the major elements involved in developing people including diversity management, performance management and career management;
- Explain issues that face a workforce based in the tropics; Appreciate the complex people management issues which will be dealt with in more advanced subjects within the HRM discipline;
- Apply contemporary methods to managing organisations human resource needs, including forecasting, selection, recruitment, training, performance assessment.
