The subject provides an overview of the financial markets and financial institutions including, banks and non-bank financial institutions. It is essential that students who seek to work in the finance sector understand the nature and operation of financial institutions and markets. Students should also be aware of risk management activities and the emerging area of Islamic banking.
Learning Outcomes
- Acquire an introductory understanding of interest rate risk management;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the structure, operation and performance of domestic equity, capital and money markets and their linkages with international financial systems;
- Discuss the role and functions of financial intermediaries and regulators in the financial system;
- Understand the importance of other markets comprising the financial system, including financial derivatives market, the property market and the managed funds industry.
