Available to level 2 Bachelor of Biomedical Science and Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science students.

The subject includes a consideration of terms and methods used to describe the occurrence of disease; the concept and measurement of cause and effect; factors affecting validity and types and choice of diagnostic tests; the design and interpretation of clinical trials and economics of disease.

Learning Outcomes

• know the meaning of terms used in epidemiology and be able to classify disease factors into determinannts and variables;
• understand and apply the concepts of spatial, temporal and population patterns to disease investigations and control;
• know the types of epidemiological data and be able to apply basic exploratory statistical methods to such data;
• understand the relationships between cause and effect of disease;
• be able to design and analyse results of surveys, cross-sectional, case control, cohort studies and randomised controlled trials; and understand the concepts of gold standard, sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of diagnostic tests.
