This subject introduces students to the profession and practice of speech pathology in Australia. Students will be introduced to the core communication and swallowing disabilities commonly assessed and managed in speech pathology practice. Students will be able to describe the professional competencies and ethical standards for speech pathology; they will understand the nature and range of communication and swallowing abilities; they will understand how work and community contexts interface with clients of differing age, culture and disorders. In addition, students will integrate foundation knowledge of anatomy, physiology, linguistics and phonetics with communication and swallowing disorders.

Learning Outcomes

• describe the primary/essential features of developmental and acquired speech, language, voice, fluency and swallowing impairments;
