Students will develop a firm foundation of knowledge and skills in intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal care. Students rehearse practical skills within a safe laboratory setting fostering a level of skill competence applicable in different environments. Students are provided with opportunities for decision-making and information-sharing essential to midwifery care of healthy women and newborns from varying cultures and belief systems.
Learning Outcomes
- apply knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of reproduction as it relates to: the four stages of labour and birth, transition to extrauterine life, and the first six weeks after birth to midwifery care of the healthy woman and baby;
- provide care consistent with the philosophy, ethics and ANMC (2006) Competency Standards;
- establish a therapeutic relationship with women within a culturally safe framework;
- identify the role of community-based support networks for breastfeeding women and for health professionals;
- develop professional midwifery practice through the use of reflection and self-awareness when caring for the birthing family and newborn infants.
