This subject builds on the principles and concepts regarding the function of the immune system introduced in second year in the subjects MI2011:03 (Microbial Diversity) and MI2021:03 (Microbiology and Immunology). Advanced Immunobiology aims to cover the biological and functional aspects of the immune system and its complex interaction with other physiological systems. It is an integrated subject providing students with an understanding of the evolution of the immune system, immunophysiology, regulation of the immune system, the potential to manipulate the immune system and the role of the immune system in infectious diseases, immunopathology and in the development of tumours.
Learning Outcomes
- to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the role of the immune system in infectious diseases;
- to develop skills to acquire and communicate information using a variety of resources and to provide a critical appraisal of scientific literature;
- to know and understand the general principles and mechanisms involved in immunopathology;
- to know and understand the physiological and functional interaction of the immune system with other physiological systems;
- to understand the concepts of immunomanipulation and modulation.
