An introduction to the design process. Exercise in design and construction. Functional and spatial design using layout and assembly drawings. Size tolerancing. Structural design; design to resist excessive deflection, yielding failure and fatigue failure. Machine design using standard machine elements and components. Introduction to the analysis and design of mechanical components such as shafts, bearings, keys, splines, gears, brakes, clutches, springs, bolted and welded joints.
