Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.

This subject will provide the theoretical foundation and skill base necessary for competent practice in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment/management of acquired language impairments. Aetiological factors will be described. Theories of language processing will be discussed. Methods of assessment, diagnosis and treatment/management for aphasia and related disorders and cognitive-communication disorders will be described. The effects of aphasia and cognitive-communication disorders on the activities and participation of people with these impairments will also be a focus of discussion.

Learning Outcomes

• students will be able to demonstrate competency in analysing and interpreting assessment results for diagnostic and management purposes and developing comprehensive and detailed plans for intervention for acquired language impairments;
• students will be able to demonstrate competency in: selecting and administering appropriate informal and formal assessments for acquired language impairments and identifying further information and referral requirements;
• students will be able to demonstrate competency in working with patients and their families/carers at an impairment, activity and participation level demonstrating awareness of cultural and social implications of these communication disorders as well as reporting on findings and making recommendations for future management and evaluating progress in intervention.
