Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.

This subject has two main components. In the first component students will discuss the knowledge, skills and attitudes which are used by speech pathologists and which will be practiced in their clinical practicum in second semester. Themes to be covered will include the use of clinical reasoning in assessment and management; procedures and approaches used in assessment and management; interacting with clients and others; establishing meaningful goals with clients and others; evaluating the effectiveness of interventions. In the second component, students will learn about types of hearing loss and central auditory processing disorders (CAPD), hearing measurement and testing, the impact of loss of hearing across the lifespan and the role of speech pathology in management of people with a hearing loss.

Learning Outcomes

• students will use clinical reasoning in assessment and management decisions regarding case studies;
• students will demonstrate knowledge of a range of approaches to assessment, goal setting, treatment planning, intervention and interactive (including counselling) processes;
• students will be familiar with and apply the CBOS2001 (Competency Based Occupational Standards 2001, Speech Pathology Australia); the Speech Pathology Australia Code of Ethics; the International Classification of Function and the principles of adult learning and group work;
• students will understand the implications of the type and degree of hearing loss and the appropriate methods of evaluation and intervention to assist patients who have a hearing loss and will have developed skills to manage CAPD.
