Pharmaceutical Public Health is a developing specialty which seeks to influence pharmaceutical health determinants on a population basis, rather than having a focus on the individual patient. One of the following subjects is a compulsory prerequisite for this research based project: TM5524:03 Qualitative Research Methods and/or HS5101:03 Contemporary Issues in Primary Health Care Research. This project is designed to be developed, implemented and finalised within one semester. The student is required to work independently through the research cycle in relation to a short project which will be implemented in the usual work environment. The components are: 1. definition of subject area (to be confirmed with supervisor) 2. establishment of aims and objectives 3. Literature Review 4.revision of methodology 7. implementation of project and collection of data 8. analysis of data 9. preparation of results 10. write-up of project suitable for publishing in a peer-reviewed journal 11. submission of final project write-up, raw data and data collection materials 12. oral scientific presentation of project.

Learning Outcomes

• be able to identify public health pharmacy practice areas where further information is required in order to further develop health service delivery;
• be able to complete a critical appraisal of the relevant literature and to prepare a literature review;
• be able to develop and test a research proposal and be able to implement a simple reearch project in the usual practice environment;
• be able to analyse data, prepare suitable tables, graphs, diagrams to best illustrate the findings and be able to integrate all information into a final conclusion with recommendations;
• be able to manage large quantities of data and referencing materials and be competent in using the Vancouver System of referencing.

Graduate Qualities

• The ability to use independent judgment to synthesise information to make intellectual and/or creative advances.
