Students must be employed minimum 0.6FTE in an Intensive Care Unit for the duration of this subject

This subject explores the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required by registered nurses when caring for patients in the intensive care unit. Content includes managing the physical and psychosocial needs for patients with complex health care problems, clinical problem-solving and introduction to technological interventions. Competency-based clinical assessment will occur during the clinical practice component of the subject.

Learning Outcomes

• apply a problem-solving approach to plan and implement individualised nursing care for critically ill patients;
• apply knowledge and skills to implement and evaluate contemporary intensive care nursing practice in relation to patient and family-centred care;
• critically assess and monitor intensive care patients within the context of a technological environment.
