This practice subject focuses on challenges to the midwife's practice as part of a multi-disciplinary team in providing care, advice and support to women and their families during the childbirth continuum. Students are introduced to the interventions needed to prevent and/or manage common obstetric complications and emergencies as well as the support needed for women requiring transport to another facility. Students continue with their "follow-through" experiences.
Learning Outcomes
- provide care consistent with the philosophy, ethics and ANMC Competency Standards demonstrating beginning competence in providing evidence-based care for women who develop emergent complications in pregnancy, labour and then during the first postpartum weeks;
- explore ways in which midwives continue to work in partnership with women to keep labour, birth and recovery culturally, spiritually, emotionally and physically safe when these phases do not proceed as planned;
- exhibit beginning skills in assessing and prioritising appropriate actions in emergency obstetrics situations including emergency transport and maternal and neonatal resuscitation;
- critique contemporary research in relation to providing evidence-based care in line with clinical governance, to women experiencing complications during the childbearing continuum.
