This subject acknowledges that many conflicts may not be resolved at all, completely, or quickly. The subject considers constructive approaches to managing and transforming ongoing conflict. Students learn about the characteristics of ongoing conflict and some of the factors that contribute to a conflict's intractability. This subject delivers a range of techniques for effectively managing ongoing conflict, including: handling conflict avoidance; using and responding to power wisely; appropriate conflict communication and developing support systems for conflicting parties. Students gain a greater understanding of the role of the conflict professional in supporting long-term transformation of conflict, beyond any potential resolution.
Learning Outcomes
- mastery of the skills and knowledge required to undertake critical analysis and evaluation of intractable conflicts and disputes with the view to developing appropriate interventions and management strategies;
- mastery of the skills and knowledge required to develop and implement appropriate interventions in cases of intractable conflicts and disputes;
- demonstrated high level cognitive skills in investigation, analysis and synthesis of complex subject related ideas through research and critically discussion.
