Available to students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Middle Schooling and Secondary).

This subject introduces students to the field of mathematics education. The subject will include investigation of the rationale for the Maths curriculum area, the nature and design of the syllabus in including examples of Queensland and international syllabi. The subject will develop discipline specific lesson and unit planning, assessment and teaching strategies appropriate to Year 10. Topics include: the nature of mathematics and mathematical thinking, influences on school mathematics including syllabus developments, developing and maintaining a classroom for learning mathematics, planning mathematics lessons, selecting and developing classroom resources and assessment practices in mathematics.

Learning Outcomes

• construct and critique different modes of mathematics assessment;
• critique and reflect on recent developments in secondary mathematics education in Australia and overseas;
• evaluate resources and technological innovations which relate to the secondary mathematics classroom;
• construct and reflect on student's own theoretical framework for the teaching of secondary mathematics within the context of the theories and practices which are seen to be effective in encouraging and facilitating the learning of mathematics;
• apply student's own framework to the specific content areas of the current syllabus documents in use in Years 8-10 of Queensland schools.
