An examination of the enormous diversity of marine plants and plant-like organisms from unicellular microscopic organisms to mangrove forests. This subject will explore micro- and macroalgae, reef ecosystems, seagrasses, samphires (salt marshes) and mangroves; and life strategies such as symbioses, epiphytes and the movement of marine plants and plant-like organisms through their environment. Special emphases will be placed on commercial potential and uses of marine plant-like organisms, down-stream biological effects of anthropogenic activities on marine plant-like communities and using field studies where possible to illustrate coursework topics. Students will attend lectures, practical classes and field excursions with BZ2240 students.

- to develop an understanding of the roles of primary producers in marine environments;
- to provide hand-on experience of techniques for sampling and analysing planktonic and benthic organisms;
- to appreciate the diversity of marine plants/algae;
- to understand the interaction of marine plants/algae with the environment.

Assumed Knowledge: | Students enrolling in this subject should have completed an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (biology or environmental science) and have a good background in cell biology and biochemistry, cellular structure and function of plant cells, and mathematics. |
