Understanding, sustaining and using tropical environments for the production of food, fibre and shelter; tropical crops; tropical pastures; farming systems; land management; and other agricultural issues of concern to students.

Learning Outcomes

• to develop competence in basic research techniques and research communication;
• to develop student skills in searching scientific literature, critical reading, writing and seminar presentation with emphasis on topics relevant to tropical agriculture;
• to introduce students to techniques used in studies of plant and animal production with special relevance to the tropics;
• to provide training in the design of experiments and field trials in agriculture and in the analysis of results.

Graduate Qualities

• The ability to think critically, to analyse and evaluate claims, evidence and arguments;
• The ability to use a variety of media and methods to retrieve, analyse, evaluate, organise and present information;
• The ability to learn independently and in a self-directed manner.
