Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.
This subject will provide the theoretical foundation and professional skill base necessary for competent practice in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment/management of acquired motor speech impairments of neurological origin (the dysarthrias and apraxia of speech) across the lifespan. Informal and formal methods of assessment, diagnosis and treatment/management will be described and demonstrated.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of: The neuorological diseases, disorders and injuries associated with acquired speech impairments in adults and children; The underlying pathology and features associated with the dysarthrias and apraxia of speech; The limitations and restrictions acquired speech impairments can impose on the activities and participation of people with these impairments;
- Students will demonstrate competency in: Selecting and administering appropriate informal and formal assessments for acquired speech impairments; Analysing and interpreting assessment results; Identifying further information and referral requirements for acquired speech impairments; Developing comprehensive and detailed plans for intervention for acquired speech impairments; Reporting on findings and making recommendations for future management.
