The subject provides basic knowledge of aetiology, pathology, signs and symptoms, management and prognosis of disease conditions encountered in allied health practice throughout the lifespan. Major topics will include: congenital, medical, surgical, psychiatric and geriatric conditions; trauma related injuries and degenerative disease processes; medical and surgical interventions are addressed, developments in prevention and community care with emphasis on psychological sequelae for all age related disabilities.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate correct usage of appropriate scientific and medical terminology;
- analyse the functional implications of damage or dysfunction to psychological and biological systems in the body;
- describe the aetiology, pathology, signs and symptoms, management and prognosis of medical, surgical, psychiatric and age related disorders commonly encountered in allied health practice;
- identify the difficulties, losses and abilities of individuals and the compensations they must make as a result of these dysfunctions throughout the lifespan.
