This subject aims to introduce the registered nurse to professional nurse practice issues. As reflective nurse practitioners students will explore issues such as human responses to illness, ethico-legal issues in specialty nursing practice and assessing specialist nursing practice using competency standards. Students will be provided with the opportunity to apply knowledge gained to their area of specialist nursing practice.

Learning Outcomes

• recognise and demonstrate their ability to be a reflective practitioner by obtaining a satisfactory grade with their professional journal;
• demonstrate their ability to development and implement interventions for complex care situations demonstrated through their reflective journalling and written essays for this subject;
• demonstrate an understanding of an application of ethico-legal principles to their practice through their reflective journalling and written essays for this subject;
• engage in activities which enhance their own and colleagues' ongoing education and abilities as a specialist practitioner and record the nature of these activities through the journalling process;
• demonstrate, via the journalling process, an understanding of the principles and value of competency based assessment for specialist practice.
