This subject is designed to lead students through an examination of North Australian society from an Indigenous perspective. A case study approach will allow students to explore Government policies and historical factors and the impact on political, social and cultural change in specific areas of North Australia. Encounters between European settlers and Indigenous people and relationships between different Indigenous groups existing in a changing world will be studied. This subject will provide students with an understanding of contemporary Indigenous societies in North Queensland, and their resilience in surviving and the struggle for equity in Australian society. Students will be introduced to issues and ideas through online learning including the discussion board and e-mail, digital medium and reading materials. Therefore it is essential that students have access to the World Wide Web to complete this subject, students who do not have access to e-mail should notify the subject coordinator.
Learning Outcomes
- Critically analyse the impact of historical policies and events on Indigenous people;
- Explore political, social and cultural change, encounters between European settlers and Indigenous people and relationships between different Indigenous groups;
- Identify issues of resilience and survival in contemporary society;
- Examine North Australian society from an Indigenous perspective.
