This subject explores the issues that impact on the provision of nursing care to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students undertaking this subject will develop an understanding and awareness of the historical, social and cultural issues which influence the health of Indigenous people in Australia today.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and apply the skills and practices that contribute to effective communication and culturally safe interactions between nurses and clients with whom they plan and to whom they deliver nursing care;
- Describe the links between colonial processes and contemporary health inequalities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the ongoing impact of the political environment upon their health;
- Compare the current health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with the health of other international Indibenous populations; and explore initiatives that address these health disparities;
- Identify and discuss key features that contribute to the excess mortality and morbidity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as outlining strategies to 'close the gap' in health disparities between Indigenous and non- Indigenous Australians;
- Discuss the role of nurses, other health professionals and professionals from outside the health sector in health care planning and delivering health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
