This subject examines the historical origins of nationalism, its development in 19th century Europe and subsequent spread around the globe. It pays particular attention to the diversity of nationalist ideas and movements and the variety of historical interpretations of nationalism.
Learning Outcomes
- develop a critical appreciation of divergent historical interpretations of nationalism;
- gain an understanding of the historical development of nationalism and its significance in the modern world;
- develop skills in historical research, analysis and writing;
- acquire the ability to assess a range of understandings of, and attitudes to, the concept of nationalism.
