This subject introduces a range of theoretical approaches to the study of the histories, philosophies and practices of education with a particular focus on relations between teachers work, constitutive factors (eg discourses of education; pedagogical and curricular practices and technologies), contextual factors (eg social and cultural contexts, including differences and inequities; particularly with respect to Indigenous education outcomes, policies; systems of provision and governance; social inclusivity and sustainability; age relations and child development), and outcomes of education. The subject reviews current research and the evidence base for theories of child and adolescent development relevant to early, middle, and senior phases of learning and explores the development of language, literacy and numeracy. Students will require access to the World Wide Web for participation in this subject. As part of this subject pre-service teachers are required to attend a five days of professional orientation. A three day program induction will be included in this subject for Townsville students.
Learning Outcomes
- analyse the development of language, literacy and numeracy;
- identify the socially, culturally and historically constructed nature of knowledge, and recognise a range of discourses of education across national and international contexts;
- anaylse the evolving role of the teacher in contemporary society;
- analyse relations among discourses of education, socio-cultural contexts, systems of provision, policy and governance, curricular and pedagogical practices, social inclusivity and sustainability, and outcomes of schooling using different theoretical approaches;
- understand how students learn and the implications for practice across various phases of learning, informed by links to theories of learning (eg cognitive, humanist, and behaviourist psychological theories).
